International Gold Event 2008

IGE History

The IGE started in Canada in 1967 as the International Gold Award Training, or IGAT.

There have been eleven IGEs held since 1967, including one in Mauritius in 1983, 25 years ago. The first Award Youth Forum was held in 1999 in Ireland, and since then the IGE has continued on a tri-annual basis.

  • 1967: Canada
  • 1971: Kenya
  • 1974: Hong Kong
  • 1979: Australia
  • 1983: Mauritius
  • 1987: Caribbean
  • 1990: New Zealand
  • 1995: Indonesia
  • 1999: Ireland
  • 2002: Canada
  • 2005: Hong Kong
  • 2008: Mauritius

The 2008 IGE was initially to be held by The President’s Award, Kenya. Due to the regrettable recent political violence in Kenya, the Trustees took the decision to withdraw the event from Kenya and hold it in Mauritius.

We are extremely grateful to the National Youth Achievement Award, Mauritius, for offering to host the event and are delighted that, thanks to the Ministry of Youth and Sport, this most important youth event has been kept in the Africa Region.
